Polk Audio Monitor 60 Series II

Donald Smith

The Polk Audio Monitor 60 series II is produced by the very well respected Polk Audio. This particular model has been massively popular over the last six months mainly because they provide a punch for your money. It is my inkling that they are commonly bought as a present for loved ones and I can safely say they make a great present. It is one of the least expensive I have reviewed (See price on amazon).I am an avid supporter of giving the 60 series II as a present because you get seriously great value for your money, so as you probably know the main job of a speaker is to deliver the sound of the recording clear and “uncolored”. Although these don’t reach the basement in low frequencies they do produce an extremely great high quality “uncolored” sound. This is exactly what you want when purchasing a speaker in this price range. I have used them together with any decent subwoofer and the combination can deliver a serious punch. These will definitely enhance any music or movie played in your living room or bedroom.

The Pros:

  • Deeper bass than similar priced speakers so that was a nice surprise
  • Gives clear "uncolored" version of recording
  • Provides great high definition sounds for the mid-range and high-range
  • Gives that ultra "close" feeling during mid-ranges which makes it great for movies (especially those scary tense scenes)
  • Internal bracing to help avoid resonances within the cabinet
  • Very affordable

The cons:

  • Doesn't have ultra deep bass
  • Doesn't provide perfect high-range performance
  • Experiences resonances a ultra high volumes

Design

So with this model your tweeter will be a dynamic balance dome, made from fabric/polymer and measures 25mm. It comes with a neodymium magnet structure which gives you a beautifully free and accurate high frequency response for accurate replication of instruments and vocals.

Different from the previous models made the Bi-laminate composite dynamic balance drivers light weight and they measure 5 1/4 inches long. They have also been made more solid with good damping in an effort to produce higher performance, deep bass and lower distortion.

The cabinet is made from 100% MDF with 3/4 thick baffles and strong internal bracing in an effort to prodice clean, clear and more lifelike sound quality. The MDF design is to produce a non resonant cabinet which I feel worked out real well depending on the volume.

Crossovers use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies. The cross overs in this model use mylar bypass capacitors in an effort to try and achieve a more accurate high frequency.

Setup and listening

A very simple set up, literally take them out of the package and stand them up, I really enjoyed trying out different genres of music with them, as I stated above they don't have a very deep base(but waaaay better than you'd expect for this price), they do provide a brilliant uncolored version of the recording and for that reason I really enjoyed listening to concert replays. For some reason I ended up listening to Bruce Springsteen's live concert in Sweden. These speakers really do shine when it comes to the mid-range, so it gives you that close feeling and that makes them really enjoyable. Bruce Springsteen in Sweden? random I know but it does show that these are really fun speakers to have and considering the price they are a great purchase.

Conclusion

First point is for the price tag, really good value, the bass is way better than I expected, when playing music between 40-100Hz frequencies I could really feel it in my chest which was cool and it really held a true clear version of the recording which is what you really want. Also in the mid-range's it gives you that close and sharp feeling which is great for watching movies, especially during the tense scenes... really adds to the tension of the scene. Anyway check out my list of pros and cons below.
